On a summer morning in Hartford, Connecticut, the life of a 21-year-old Black / African American male named Brian Oliver was cut tragically short. On July 19, 2021, police responded to a report of a shooting on Irving Street around 7:45 a.m. and found Oliver outside a residence, unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the city's 21st homicide of the year.
Brian, born on July 14, 2000, was known for his affectionate smile and was an aspiring
musician who performed under the name "Ace Streets". Remembered by loved ones as caring and respectful, he was also an avid reader with entrepreneurial ambitions. In the wake of his death, a vigil was held, led by Mothers United Against Violence, to mourn the personal loss felt by the community.
The investigation into Oliver's death revealed that he had been involved in a feud stemming from a fight at a party weeks prior. Surveillance footage from the night of the shooting showed Oliver encountering Joshua White shortly after leaving a house party. White was aware of the previous altercation and was identified as a suspect.
On October 7, 2021, authorities located and arrested Joshua White at the Mynx Cabaret strip club. At the time of his arrest, White was found in possession of a loaded, untraceable "ghost gun". He was subsequently charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and several weapons offenses. His bond was set at $2.25 million. The arrest brought a measure of relief to Brian Oliver's family and the wider Hartford community as they continued to grapple with the senseless violence that took a young life.
