On the late evening of February 4, 2024, Jose Jesus Cortez, a 39-year-old Hispanic male from Hartford, Connecticut, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. in the area of the 70 block of Cabot Street. Hartford Police officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a ShotSpotter alert. Upon their arrival, they discovered Cortez unresponsive inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel transported Cortez to St.
Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions immediately began an investigation into the shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the case to contact their tip line.
In the wake of his death, family, friends, and community members gathered for a vigil to remember Jose Jesus Cortez. Organized in part by the group Mothers United Against Violence, the vigil served as a call for justice and an end to gun violence. His family described him as a loving and caring person, and they pleaded with the public for anyone with information to come forward to the police. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains ongoing.
