On July 27, 1969, Trooper Allen Harvie Bufford of the Arkansas State Police was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop near Little Rock, Arkansas. At 29 years old, with one year of service, he had previously served in the U.S. Air Force. During the stop, as he was issuing a speeding citation to a female driver, her male passenger exited the vehicle and shot Trooper Bufford with a .22 caliber handgun.
