On a warm evening in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 2, 1967, the life of 27-year-old Lloyd Worthy, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. A two-year veteran of the Little Rock Police Department and a U.S. Navy veteran, Officer Worthy was on duty when he stopped to investigate a suspicious vehicle. He radioed in the stop but was not heard from again.
While investigating, he chased a man behind a house where he was shot with a. 38 caliber handgun.
Despite his injuries, Officer Worthy managed to make his way back to the street before collapsing. Several people who were passing by came to his aid and called for assistance.
Three weeks after the shooting, a 54-year-old suspect was apprehended in Little Rock. The suspect was subsequently sentenced to life in prison on December 18, 1967. He remained incarcerated until his death in prison in 1984. Officer Worthy was survived by his son. His death was a significant loss to the community and the Little Rock Police Department.
