In the early days of a new year, a family's life was irrevocably altered by a violent act on the streets of Little Rock, Arkansas. On January 3, 2022, 20-year-old Dmahre Dillard, a male known affectionately to his loved ones as “Drew” or “Heavy D,” was fatally shot. The incident unfolded on South Ringo Street, where another individual was also injured.
Dillard was transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds but ultimately succumbed to his injuries, marking the city's first homicide of the year.
According to his family, Dillard, a young man with a passion for football, martial arts, and playing the drums and saxophone, was acting as a peacemaker. He had reportedly gone to speak with an individual who had been harassing his nephew. His family believes he was not there to fight or escalate the situation, but rather to talk. Tragically, the encounter turned deadly, and Dillard was shot.
In the wake of the shooting, the Little Rock Police Department opened an investigation into the homicide. At the time of the initial reports, no suspects had been publicly identified or taken into custody. The investigation was described as ongoing as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the young man's death. Dillard was remembered by his family as someone who was finding his way in the world and who deeply loved his family, for whom he was willing to do anything.
