On a fateful evening in Little Rock, Arkansas, the life of a dedicated police detective was tragically cut short. Joseph Tucker Fisher, a 34-year-old Caucasian male and a 12-year veteran of the Little Rock Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on February 7, 1995. The events unfolded as Detective Fisher and his fellow officers were executing a narcotics search warrant at an apartment complex on Butler Road.
As the entry team breached the door of the residence, they were met
with immediate gunfire from within. The suspect, Willie Leon Green, opened fire on the officers, striking Detective Fisher in the upper shoulder. Although he was wearing a protective vest, the bullet entered an unprotected area, inflicting a fatal wound. Another officer, Detective Frederick Lee, was also struck by gunfire, sustaining a serious head wound that he ultimately survived.
In the exchange of fire that followed, officers wounded Green in the leg and took him into custody. The investigation that followed was swift, supported by evidence of prior controlled purchases of narcotics from Green's apartment which had led to the warrant. Green was subsequently charged with capital murder for the death of Detective Fisher and attempted capital murder for the shooting of Detective Lee.
Willie Leon Green was tried by a jury and convicted of first-degree murder and attempted capital murder. He received consecutive sentences of life imprisonment plus thirty years for his crimes. As of late 2022, he remained incarcerated at the Cummins Unit, a state prison in Arkansas. Detective Fisher, who was survived by his two daughters, is remembered for his dedicated service and ultimate sacrifice.
