On August 17, 1958, 35-year-old Arkansas State Trooper Ermon Boyce Cox was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a man suspected of driving while intoxicated. Trooper Cox, who had served with the agency for just eight months, was off-duty at the time. He was accompanied by his 9-year-old son in their personal vehicle when they observed a traffic violation.
