In Little Rock, Arkansas, on the evening of November 7, 2022, a sense of unease settled over the area near 1514 W. 31st Street as police responded to reports of an individual with a firearm. The situation tragically escalated when officers discovered 36-year-old Derick Mack, a Black male, near the intersection of 33rd Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene, but it was too late; Mack was pronounced dead.
His death marked the 73rd homicide in Little Rock for that year.
The Little Rock Police Department's Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Search Unit promptly began a thorough investigation into the shooting. Their efforts included canvassing the neighborhood for any potential leads, meticulously reviewing available surveillance footage, and speaking with witnesses who may have seen or heard something crucial. Through this diligent police work, investigators were able to identify two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting.
The investigation led to the arrests of 47-year-old Michael Brown and 46-year-old Shannon Fells, both residents of Little Rock. Following their apprehension, Brown chose to remain silent after being read his rights. In contrast, Fells waived her rights and provided a recorded statement to the authorities. Both Brown and Fells were subsequently charged with first-degree murder for their alleged involvement in Derick Mack's death and were transported to the Pulaski County Regional Jail.
