In the winter of 1983, a bright and promising life was tragically cut short. Marjorie 'Greta' Mason, a 22-year-old white woman, had recently embarked on a new chapter of her life as an Air Force nurse, having been transferred to the Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas just ten days prior. On February 26, her life took a horrific turn when she was abducted while out shopping for furniture. The following day, her body was discovered near an abandoned farmhouse in a rural area.
She had been raped and shot twice in the head.
The investigation into her brutal murder led authorities to pursue two Black men who were seen fleeing from her stolen car after a police chase. Six days after the discovery of Mason's body, a confidential informant, described in police files as being unreliable at times, implicated Barry Lee Fairchild and his brother in the crime. This tip led to the arrest of Barry Lee Fairchild, a man who was functionally illiterate. His arrest was not without incident; a police dog was released on him, resulting in injuries that required stitches.
Following his arrest, Fairchild gave two videotaped confessions. In his statements, he admitted to participating in the kidnapping and rape but denied being the one who pulled the trigger, claiming another man was responsible for her death. However, he later recanted these confessions. At his trial, he asserted that he had been beaten and threatened by sheriff's deputies to force his confession. Despite these claims and the fact that no other suspect was ever charged in the case, Fairchild was convicted of capital murder on August 2, 1983, and sentenced to death.
The case was fraught with controversy for years. Fairchild's defense attorneys argued that his confession was coerced and that he was mentally handicapped. There were also claims from other men who stated they had been detained and subjected to abusive interrogation techniques during the investigation into Mason's murder. Despite numerous appeals and even a federal judge's finding that Fairchild had not fired the fatal shots, his conviction was upheld. Barry Lee Fairchild was executed by lethal injection on August 31, 1995, leaving lingering questions about the investigation and the full story of what happened to Marjorie Greta Mason.
