An evening in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, took a tragic turn for 47-year-old Tarlesha McPhearson, a local African American woman. On August 2, 2025, in a seemingly random act of violence, McPhearson was shot while riding as a passenger in a vehicle near the intersection of West 12th Avenue and South Cypress Street. The series of events began when McPhearson flagged down a car for a ride.
Shortly after she entered the vehicle, an unknown Black male, estimated to be in his mid-40s to 50s, fired a single shot into the driver's side window.
The bullet struck McPhearson in the face, causing a critical injury. The driver of the vehicle immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Tarlesha McPhearson succumbed to her injuries sixteen days later, on August 18, 2025. Her death prompted the Pine Bluff Police Department to upgrade their investigation from a first-degree battery to a homicide case.
