In the early hours of a Friday morning in Little Rock, Arkansas, a promising life was cut tragically short. Lawrence Chudi Ibekwe, a 24-year-old man, was fatally shot on August 19, 2016, just twelve days before his twenty-fifth birthday. The incident, which marked the city's 20th homicide of the year, unfolded inside a duplex on Mara Lynn Road in the western part of the city.
According to a witness at the scene, two men arrived at the residence with the intention of purchasing narcotics.
Shortly after entering, one of the men produced a firearm and demanded that Ibekwe and the witness get on the floor. While the witness complied, Ibekwe resisted and a struggle ensued with the armed man. It was during this physical confrontation that he was shot. The two suspects then fled the scene, leaving a life extinguished in their wake.
Lawrence, known to his loved ones as Chudi, was a young man of considerable ambition and accomplishment. He was a 2009 graduate of Parkview Arts & Science Magnet High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2015. In 2010, while still a student, he co-founded an IT company, Mali Technical Services, which he continued to operate while also working as a Software and Systems Engineer. He was an active member of his church, St. Augustine Catholic Church in North Little Rock, where he served as an usher and an altar server. His family and friends remember him for his bright smile, jokes, and a booming voice that could fill a room.
Despite the witness account, the case of Lawrence Ibekwe's death remains unsolved. The Little Rock Police Department lists his death as a cold case from 2016, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The two men who fled the apartment that night have not been publicly identified, and a resolution for his grieving family and community has yet to be found.
