In the autumn of 2021, a family gathering in West Helena, Arkansas, took a tragic turn, ending in the death of 48-year-old Joe Lewis Clayton Sr. An African American man known for his sense of humor and love for his family, Clayton was fatally shot on October 31, 2021. The incident unfolded following a disturbance call that brought police to the scene, where they discovered Clayton on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Despite being rushed to Helena Regional Medical Center, Clayton succumbed to his injuries. The investigation that followed pointed to a conflict within his own family. Authorities, after conducting interviews with witnesses and reviewing video evidence, identified his brother-in-law, 56-year-old Howard Tate, as the alleged shooter.
Tate was subsequently arrested and faced a charge of second-degree murder in connection with Clayton's death. He was held at the Phillips County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
