On an April evening in 2022, the life of a young woman was tragically cut short in Little Rock, Arkansas. Brittany Cottrell, a 27-year-old Black female, was found deceased on April 7th at an apartment complex on Terra Vista Circle. Responding to a report of a shooting, law enforcement officers discovered Cottrell suffering from a fatal gunshot wound and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, detectives were cautious in labeling the nature of her death, pending further
investigation. Cottrell's body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death. The following day, on April 8, the results of the autopsy confirmed the investigators' suspicions: Brittany Cottrell's death was a homicide.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect. Nichalas Bates, who was 24 years old at the time and in a relationship with Cottrell, was arrested in connection with her death. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Prior to this incident, Bates had a previous arrest in 2019 for a separate altercation. In the wake of the tragedy, local authorities emphasized the importance of addressing domestic violence and encouraged those in need to seek available resources.
