On the evening of September 9, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in Little Rock, Arkansas, leaving a young man dead and several others wounded. Aukemian Spencer, an 18-year-old Black male, was discovered by responding officers in the driver's seat of a white SUV near the 1000 block of South Van Buren Street. He had sustained an apparent gunshot wound and, despite the efforts of medical personnel who were called to the scene, he was pronounced deceased.
The tragic event unfolded just before 9:45 p.m., prompted by a Shot Spotter activation and numerous 911 calls reporting shots fired in the vicinity of 12th Street and Jonesboro.
Inside the vehicle with Spencer were two other individuals who had also been shot. Both were transported to a local hospital and were listed in stable condition. The violence of that night extended beyond the white SUV, as another vehicle was also struck by gunfire. The occupants of the second car, two adults and a 17-year-old, received medical treatment for minor injuries that were reportedly caused by debris from the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath, homicide detectives and the Little Rock Police Department's Crime Scene Search Unit began their investigation. They canvassed the neighborhood, searching for evidence and appealing to the community for any information that might lead to a break in the case. Authorities stated at the time that they believed the incident was isolated and that there was no immediate threat to the surrounding area. The investigation into the death of Aukemian Spencer was announced as ongoing. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been publicly announced, and no suspects have been formally identified in connection with the shooting. The case remains an open investigation, leaving a family and a community awaiting answers and justice for the young life that was lost.
