In the quiet neighborhood of Little Woods in New Orleans, a tragic event unfolded on the afternoon of December 4, 2024. New Orleans Police Department officers responded to a medical call in the 7900 block of Bullard Avenue, where they discovered 18-year-old Jairus Jeremiah Gayden unresponsive inside a residence. Emergency Medical Services were unable to revive him and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initially a medical call, the nature of the investigation shifted when the
Orleans Parish Coroner's Office determined that Gayden's death was the result of gunshot-related injuries, classifying the case as a homicide. This revelation prompted an intensive investigation by the NOPD Homicide Section. Detectives worked diligently to piece together the circumstances that led to the young man's untimely death.
Their investigation led them to identify a 15-year-old male as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. On December 11, 2024, just a week after Gayden's death, members of the NOPD's Violent Offender Warrant Squad, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals, located and apprehended the juvenile suspect at a residence in the Seventh District. The unidentified teen was arrested on one count of second-degree murder and was subsequently booked into the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the shooting and the relationship between the victim and the suspect have not been released to the public as the investigation continues.
