In a tragic turn of events during what should have been a festive time, a 41-year-old man, Derwin James, lost his life in a shooting in Baton Rouge. The incident also left his 10-year-old son wounded. James was a devoted father to four children and was also a grandfather. Described by those who knew him as a 'model father' and a 'stand-up guy,' he was a hardworking man dedicated to providing for his children.
The fatal shooting occurred at the intersection of North Acadian Thruway and
Fairfields Avenue. In a heroic act, James shielded his young son from the gunfire. In the immediate aftermath, there were initial reports suggesting that James might have accidentally shot his own son in the ensuing chaos. However, the Baton Rouge Police Department later clarified that the child was struck by a bullet fired by the assailant, who is believed to have been specifically targeting James.
After the shooting, James attempted to drive away from the scene to get help. Tragically, he lost consciousness behind the wheel, leading to his vehicle crashing into a house in the 2300 block of Pawnee Street. Both he and his son were transported to a local hospital, but James ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His son was treated for a leg wound and has since been released from the hospital.
