On February 8, 2023, Officer Ramiro "Rama" Paredes Jr., a 26-year veteran of the Laredo Police Department (LPD), was found deceased at his residence in the 6100 block of Amir Drive in Laredo, Texas. Concerned colleagues and family members conducted a welfare check around 2 p.m. after being unable to reach him. Upon arrival, officers discovered Paredes inside the home with apparent gunshot wounds. The Crimes Against Persons Unit took over the scene for investigation.
A preliminary investigation by the LPD, updated on February 10, indicated that Officer Paredes died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Texas Rangers conducted an independent parallel investigation into his death. As the evidence suggested suicide, there were no suspects or arrests associated with the case.
Officer Paredes was a respected member of the law enforcement community, serving as the President of the Laredo Police Officers Association and as the Region II Director for the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas. His passing prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences from colleagues, local officials, and community members, who remembered him for his dedication and service. Professional counseling services and peer support were made available to all LPD staff following his death.
Funeral services were held on February 13, 2023, with a Mass of Christian Burial at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church, followed by a ceremony at the Laredo Police Department headquarters. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post 59, the U.S. Army Honor Guard, and the Laredo Police Department.
