On December 11, 2023, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Laredo Police Department (LPD) officers responded to reports of gunfire near Arcadia Loop and Lowry Road in north Laredo. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old José Roberto Obregón Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Obregón was promptly transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The swift response of LPD officers, who were in the vicinity and heard the gunshots, led to the immediate detention of two suspects attempting to flee the scene in a truck. The vehicle was intercepted after officers deflated one of its tires. The occupants, identified as 45-year-old Rubén Tobías and his 18-year-old son, Rubén Tobías Jr., were arrested at the scene. Two additional suspects, 17-year-old Iván Oziel Méndez and 18-year-old José Gustavo Domínguez, were apprehended nearby with the assistance of U.S. Border Patrol agents as they attempted to evade capture by fleeing toward the U.S.-Mexico border.
All four individuals have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Obregón's death. Additionally, Tobías Jr. and Méndez face charges of tampering with evidence. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and authorities have not disclosed further details pending trial proceedings.
Obregón's passing marks the seventh homicide in Laredo for the year 2023. His death has deeply affected the local community, with family and friends mourning the loss of a young life. Funeral services were held at Aguero Funeral Home and Crematorium, with interment planned in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, at a later date.
