Patrol Officer Victor Pablo Serna, aged 29, of the Laredo Police Department in Texas, tragically lost his life on September 11, 1984. Officer Serna was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call at around 11:06 p.m. After officers had arrested two suspects, a juvenile began throwing rocks at them. As Officer Serna entered the yard where the juvenile was throwing rocks, another man shot him in the face with a shotgun. Despite being transported to Mercy Hospital, Officer Serna succumbed to his wounds after midnight.
The suspect, an 18-year-old, was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Officer Serna had served with the Laredo Police Department for three years and was survived by his wife.
The incident highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face while on duty and the impact such tragedies have on their families and communities. Officer Serna's sacrifice is remembered and honored by his fellow officers and the citizens of Laredo.
