Samuel Mendez Jr., a 37-year-old Hispanic male from Laredo, Texas, tragically passed away on October 30, 2021. He was fatally shot by his brother, Gilbert Jerry Mendez, 28, in their family home located in the 200 block of East Olive Street. The incident occurred in the afternoon, and Samuel Mendez Sr., the father of both men, was also shot and killed at the scene. Samuel Mendez Jr. was critically injured and taken to Laredo Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries several days later.
The Laredo Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting and quickly identified Gilbert Jerry Mendez as the suspect. He was arrested with assistance from the U.S. Marshals in the Mines Road area and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The case was referred to the District Attorney’s Office, which approved the arrest warrants. Gilbert Jerry Mendez faced a $500,000 bond and was considered armed and dangerous.
In June 2024, Gilbert Jerry Mendez pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of murder for the deaths of his father and brother. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison by the 49th District Court Judge Joe Lopez. The sentences for the two counts of murder will run concurrently.
