In the autumn of 2016, the life of 20-year-old Darnyreouckeonu Jones-Dickerson was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Mt. Morris Township, Michigan. On the evening of October 5, 2016, Jones-Dickerson was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Kingwater Party Store. He was inside his red truck when the incident occurred. After being shot five times, he passed away at Hurley Medical Center.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of two cousins, Dequavion Harris,
then 21, and Kemo Parks, Jr., then 20. The events leading up to the fatal shooting began when Harris and Parks arrived at the party store in a vehicle driven by a teenage girl. The two men instructed the driver to leave after they exited the vehicle. Shortly after, gunshots were heard, and Harris was seen firing into Jones-Dickerson's truck.
During the subsequent trial, a chilling motive for the murder was revealed. Harris believed that Jones-Dickerson was involved in the killing of his cousin and sought revenge. A rap song written by Harris that detailed the shooting was presented as evidence. In October 2018, a jury convicted both Harris and Parks of first-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm. The convictions carried a sentence of life in prison.
