Gerardo Nino, a 31-year-old Hispanic man, was a lifelong resident of Laredo, Texas, though he was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a son and a brother, and one memorial page noted that he had worked as a Juvenile Officer for Webb County. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, and many other relatives and friends.
In the early morning hours of May 3, 2022, police in Laredo responded to a call about shots being fired near the intersection of North India Avenue and Guerrero Street.
At around 3:54 a.m., while searching the area, officers heard a woman screaming from inside a home. They found Gerardo inside, lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. His mother told them he had been shot. Paramedics arrived but pronounced him dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation by the Laredo Police Department suggested that someone had intentionally fired a weapon at the home, possibly as the result of a personal feud.
The investigation led to several arrests. Police identified a teenager, Alexander Lopez, as a suspect. Along with Lopez, another minor and several adults were implicated in the shooting. Among those charged with murder were Gerardo Rocha, 30, who was accused of being a getaway driver; Ashley Renea Guzman, 27, who was allegedly the driver of another vehicle involved; and Carlos Valero, 21, who was already incarcerated on other matters when he was charged.
In January 2023, Alexander Lopez, who was 15 at the time, was certified to be tried as an adult for his role in the killing. In September 2025, Lopez pleaded guilty to the charge of murder. He was sentenced to serve 42 years in prison.
The case against Gerardo Rocha proceeded to trial. Though his cell phone GPS data had placed him at the scene, he maintained his innocence. In June 2026, a jury found Gerardo Rocha not guilty of murder, and he was acquitted of the charge.
