On October 3, 2023, at approximately 2:47 a.m., 19-year-old Michael Torres Jr. was fatally shot in the 2300 block of East Stewart Street in Laredo, Texas. Upon arrival, officers found Torres with apparent gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Preliminary investigations indicated that Torres had just arrived at the location in his vehicle when he was targeted, suggesting the attack was not random.
In the days following the incident, Laredo Police Department investigators identified multiple suspects connected to the homicide. On October 10, authorities located a white Chevy Trax believed to be involved in the shooting, leading to the arrest of 21-year-old Mauro Azahel Perales. Perales was charged with murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, and tampering with evidence. Subsequent search warrants executed on October 11 at residences on Potomac Loop and Blaine Street resulted in the apprehension of 21-year-old Sheldon Javier Gonzalez-Santiago. Gonzalez-Santiago faced charges including murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, and manufacture and delivery of controlled substances.
A third suspect, 19-year-old Luis Cardona Jr., was identified but initially remained at large. Considered armed and dangerous, Cardona was added to Laredo Crime Stoppers’ most wanted list. He was eventually apprehended on October 17, 2024, in Monterrey, Mexico, through a coordinated effort involving the Laredo Police Department, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, and Mexican authorities. Cardona was charged with murder for his role in Torres' death.
Investigations revealed that the suspects were involved in organized criminal activities and were linked to other shootings in Laredo, including incidents on September 15 and October 1, 2023. These earlier shootings did not result in injuries but underscored a pattern of violent behavior among the group. The arrests of Perales, Gonzalez-Santiago, and Cardona brought a sense of closure to the community, as all identified suspects in Torres' murder were taken into custody.
Prior to his death, Torres had been featured on the Laredo Crime Stoppers’ most wanted list in May 2023 for an aggravated assault incident where he allegedly fired shots at another individual. He was arrested and released on bond in May 2023.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges of addressing organized crime and gun violence in Laredo. Law enforcement agencies continue to work diligently to investigate and prevent such incidents, aiming to enhance safety and security within the community.
