On November 26, 2023, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Roberto Chavez, a 19-year-old resident of Laredo, Texas, was fatally shot multiple times at 527 Riverhill Loop, a subdivision along the Rio Grande.
In early December 2023, a 16-year-old male suspect was apprehended in Dallas with assistance from the South Texas U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. The juvenile was extradited to Laredo and charged with murder in connection to Chavez's death.
By July 2024, the suspect, identified as Carlos Alberto Fructoso, was certified to stand trial as an adult on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Webb County Attorney's Office emphasized the necessity of handling his case within the adult criminal justice system due to the severity of the offenses.
Roberto Chavez's passing marked the sixth homicide in Laredo for the year 2023. He is remembered by his family, including his son, mother, wife, siblings, and numerous extended relatives and friends.
