John Lydell Tyler, a 28-year-old African American man, was fatally shot on March 31, 2019, in Laredo, Texas. Tyler, a decorated soldier in the Texas Army National Guard, was assigned to Operation Guardian Support in Laredo. He was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen behind an apartment complex in the 4300 block of Santa Maria Avenue. Despite efforts to save him, Tyler succumbed to his injuries at Laredo Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that Tyler had been involved in an
altercation at Blue Moon Country Bar & Patio earlier that night. Surveillance footage and witness statements indicated that Gilberto Guadalupe Villarreal, 26, and two women sought out Tyler with the intent to confront him over the incident. Villarreal was heard saying, "Ya estás muerto ," before locating Tyler at the apartment complex and shooting him.
Villarreal was arrested and charged with murder. In March 2022, he pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of Tyler and an additional five years for unlawfully carrying a weapon. The sentences were to run concurrently.
The case drew significant attention due to Tyler's status as a National Guardsman and the circumstances surrounding his death. The Laredo Police Department and other authorities worked diligently to bring justice for Tyler and his family.
