Gilbert "Billy" De La Torre, a 22-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity from Laredo, Texas, tragically passed away on February 13, 2022. His death was part of a triple shooting incident at the TKO Sports Café in Laredo. The incident involved gunfire from Joe Manuel Martinez, who was initially charged with three counts of murder. However, Martinez later pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter for the deaths of Gilbert De La Torre and Cesar Samuel Escobar, while the murder charge for the
third victim, Jose Mario Luna III, was dismissed due to a viable self-defense argument.
The sentencing of Joe Manuel Martinez, 25, was met with anger and disappointment from the families of the victims. Martinez received a 15-year prison sentence for the manslaughter charges, which will run concurrently.
