On February 28, 2023, 16-year-old Dadrien Harrison, a junior at Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, Texas, was fatally shot near his school. The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. in the 7300 block of Skillman Street, less than a mile from the campus. Harrison was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In response to the tragedy, Lake Highlands High School implemented precautionary measures, including the use of metal detectors at school entrances for
the remainder of the week. The Richardson Independent School District also provided crisis counseling teams to support students and staff affected by Harrison's death.
The Dallas Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting and, on March 4, 2023, arrested a 14-year-old suspect in connection with Harrison's death. Due to the suspect's juvenile status, authorities did not release their name. The relationship between Harrison and the suspect, as well as the motive for the shooting, remain unclear.
The community expressed grief and outrage over the senseless loss of a young life. A vigil and balloon release were held in Harrison's memory, with attendees calling for justice and seeking answers regarding the circumstances of his death. The nonprofit organization 'No More Violence' worked closely with Harrison's family during this difficult time.
Harrison's funeral service was held on March 11, 2023, at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Dallas. In the wake of his passing, community members initiated fundraising efforts to support his family, highlighting the collective mourning and solidarity in the aftermath of the tragedy.
