In the early hours of July 27, 2024, a shooting occurred at a Texaco gas station located at the intersection of I-35E frontage road and Laureland Road in southern Dallas, Texas. Five individuals were shot during the incident, including 28-year-old Devon Parlay Lewis, who sustained critical injuries. Despite medical intervention, Lewis succumbed to his injuries on August 5, 2024.
The Dallas Police Department responded to the scene around 4:30 a.m., finding three men and two women with multiple gunshot wounds. The victims were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment. Witnesses reported that the shooting involved multiple assailants who approached the group and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Through witness testimonies and surveillance footage, investigators identified one of the shooters as 28-year-old Dantae Brooks. On August 14, 2024, Brooks was arrested and charged with murder, six counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a prohibited weapon. At the time of his arrest, Brooks was found in possession of a Glock 17 equipped with a machine gun conversion device, rendering it a fully automatic firearm.
The tragic death of Devon Lewis has deeply affected the local community. A resident of DeSoto, Texas, Lewis was remembered by family and friends during memorial services held on August 15 and 16, 2024. He was laid to rest at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Dallas.
This incident has heightened concerns about gun violence in Dallas, prompting community leaders and organizations to advocate for increased efforts to address and prevent such tragedies. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend any additional suspects involved in the shooting.
