James Allen Joe, a 34-year-old male police officer with the Dallas Police Department, tragically died on January 14, 1988. Officer Joe was off-duty when he observed a burglary-in-progress at an apartment complex on Whitehurst Drive, where he resided. He called for additional units before confronting the suspects and identifying himself as an officer. During the confrontation, one of the suspects opened fire on him, fatally wounding him.
Officer Joe was able to return fire and wound the suspect before succumbing to his injuries in his wife's arms.
The suspect who shot Officer Joe was later sentenced to death and executed on December 6, 1995. The second suspect involved in the burglary testified against the shooter and received a 20-year sentence. Officer Joe, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, had served with the Dallas Police Department for four years and was survived by his wife and six children.
