Fredrick Myers, a 42-year-old African American man from Dallas, TX, was fatally shot on August 10, 2019. Myers was the owner of the Kingz of Cutz barbershop in South Dallas, where he was well-known for his generosity and community involvement. He often provided jobs, meals, and school supplies to those in need. On the day of his death, Myers was shot by Alexis Bowman, a former employee who had been causing trouble at the shop.
Bowman, who was 36 years old at the time, had asked Myers for money earlier in the day and returned later with a gun. Myers tried to protect the people inside the shop by telling Bowman to leave, but she shot him in the chest as he attempted to close the door.
Bowman turned herself in to the police less than a week after the shooting and was charged with murder. However, in July 2023, a jury found her guilty of manslaughter instead. The jury recommended a 12-year prison sentence for Bowman. During the trial, it was revealed that Bowman and Myers had an open sexual relationship, and Bowman claimed that Myers owed her money. Witnesses testified that Bowman had knocked over snacks in the shop and that Myers had tried to choke her before she left and returned with a gun.
Myers' death deeply affected the community, and a vigil was held outside his barbershop to honor his memory. His mother, Betty Myers-Davis, has continued to manage the barbershop in his honor. Myers is remembered as a loving and giving person who always helped those in need.
