On March 25, 2023, 20-year-old David Allen Rezentes was fatally shot in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the 3200 block of El Paso Street on the city's West Side. Upon arrival, San Antonio police officers discovered a vehicle parked with its engine running and a bullet hole in the passenger window, but no occupants were present.
Shortly thereafter, officers responded to a call about an unresponsive individual lying on the sidewalk at the intersection of Elvira and Southwest 19th Street, one block south of the initial scene. The individual was identified as Rezentes, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Rezentes had arranged a meeting through social media for a drug transaction. Upon arrival at the agreed location, he was ambushed, robbed, and shot by multiple suspects. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies enabled detectives to identify and apprehend several individuals involved in the crime. Jonathan Garza, 20, was arrested in May 2023 and charged with murder, as he admitted to acting as the getaway driver during the incident.
Subsequent arrests included 20-year-old Mariah Cabrera and 21-year-old Jayveon Johnson, who were taken into custody in September 2023. Both were charged with murder, with authorities alleging that they orchestrated the robbery and shooting of Rezentes. In December 2024, Cabrera was sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to her role in the fatal robbery. During sentencing, prosecutors emphasized the premeditated nature of the crime, highlighting that Cabrera and her accomplices had arranged the meeting with the intent to rob Rezentes, ultimately leading to his death.
The tragic death of David Rezentes underscores the dangers associated with illicit drug transactions and the use of social media platforms to facilitate such activities.
