On April 27, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, two-year-old Romell Antonio Richardson tragically lost his life due to an accidental gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at the family's residence on Kents Store Street, located on the city's West Side. According to reports, Romell's father had placed a loaded firearm on top of a television. The young child, attempting to reach for water, inadvertently caused the gun to fall.
Upon hitting the floor, the firearm discharged, and the bullet struck Romell in the head.
Family members immediately transported Romell to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to University Hospital for specialized trauma care. Despite the medical team's efforts, Romell was pronounced dead at 8:51 a.m.
In the aftermath of this heartbreaking event, San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officers conducted interviews with both parents to understand the circumstances leading to the accidental discharge. At the time of the incident, another child, a three-year-old sibling, was present in the home but was unharmed. This child was placed in the care of a relative following the incident.
