On June 19, 2023, 12-year-old TreyShawn Eunes tragically lost his life in Fort Worth, Texas. He was attending a Juneteenth barbecue with his father at a music studio located in a strip mall on Brentwood Stair Road. While playing video games inside the studio, a 3-year-old child found an unsecured, loaded handgun and accidentally discharged it, striking TreyShawn.
Despite his father's immediate efforts to rush him to Cook Children's Medical Center, TreyShawn succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
In the aftermath of this tragic incident, Fort Worth police launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the shooting and to identify any responsible parties. Surveillance footage from the scene revealed that 35-year-old Decarlos Jordan, who was present at the gathering, took deliberate actions to conceal evidence. The footage showed Jordan entering the room where the shooting occurred, removing the handgun, mopping up blood both inside and outside the building, and taking away a rifle before leaving the premises. These actions led to his arrest on charges of tampering with and fabricating physical evidence.
TreyShawn's mother, LaKesha Bay, has been vocal about the need for accountability and the importance of gun safety to prevent such tragedies. She emphasized that proper storage of firearms, such as using gun safes and holsters, could have prevented her son's death. Bay continues to advocate for justice for TreyShawn, expressing her determination to hold those responsible accountable for the negligence that led to her son's untimely passing.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities indicating that additional arrests are possible as they continue to examine the events surrounding the incident. This tragic event has underscored the critical importance of gun safety, particularly in environments where children are present, and has prompted calls within the community for increased awareness and preventive measures to ensure such a heartbreaking incident does not recur.
