On May 30, 2024, in rural Mission, Texas, 54-year-old Fernando Madrid was fatally shot during a dispute over the ownership of roosters. The incident occurred around 3:53 a.m. at a residence on the 5700 block of Doffing Road. Deputies from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a gunshot victim and, upon arrival, detained two men outside the residence. Family members informed the deputies that Madrid was inside a restroom, where he was found with a fatal gunshot wound.
Investigations revealed that Madrid's nephew, 21-year-old Aaron Cervantes, had arrived at the property with another family member to retrieve roosters he claimed belonged to him. As Cervantes began removing the birds, an argument ensued between him and his uncle over their ownership. The confrontation escalated, leading to Cervantes allegedly shooting Madrid with a handgun. Emergency Medical Services confirmed Madrid's death at the scene.
Cervantes was arrested and initially charged with capital murder. During his arraignment, Justice of the Peace Jerry Muñoz set his bond at $2 million, citing the severity of the crime and potential flight risk due to the proximity to the Mexico border. Subsequently, a grand jury indicted Cervantes on a murder charge, a first-degree felony. In a court appearance on September 24, 2024, Cervantes pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case is scheduled to proceed with further hearings, with the next court date set for November 6, 2024.
