In a tragic turn of events, a man who had fled the violence of his homeland in search of safety found a violent end on a quiet street in Rochester, Minnesota. Ahmed Muafaq Abdulhu Al Naddf, a 40-year-old male Iraqi immigrant, was fatally shot on the evening of March 12, 2018. He had moved to the United States in 2014 with his wife and two children, hoping to build a peaceful life away from the turmoil in Iraq.
That peace was shattered over a dispute that began with the unfounded accusation of a minor traffic incident.
On that Monday night, Al Naddf was confronted by a group of men who alleged that his vehicle had struck their parked car. In reality, there was no damage to either vehicle. As the argument escalated, Al Naddf took out his cellphone, seemingly to record the confrontation. This act was met with deadly force. One of the men, identified as Sao Yim Jr., brandished a handgun and fired, striking Al Naddf in the chest. He died on the sidewalk.
The aftermath of the shooting was captured by surveillance video from a nearby apartment building. The footage showed two of the suspects going through Al Naddf's pockets after he had been shot. This crucial evidence led police to the suspects and the handgun believed to have been used in the killing. Four men were arrested in connection with the homicide: 25-year-old Eric Tyler Lee, 24-year-old Sao Yim Jr., 23-year-old Traequan Bamlounghong, and 24-year-old Deante Stanifer.
Sao Yim Jr. was charged with second-degree murder, and Eric Lee was charged with aiding an offender. The other two men who were initially arrested were later released from jail. The investigation revealed that there was no prior connection between Al Naddf and his assailants. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, a victim of a senseless act of violence that cut short a life that had sought refuge and found tragedy instead.
