On a late summer afternoon in Rochester, Minnesota, the sound of gunshots shattered the peace at the Parkside Mobile Home Park on August 31, 2015. When the chaos subsided, 22-year-old Trumane Lamar Gillmore, a Black male, lay dead on a basketball court. The incident, which unfolded around 2:15 p.m., also left two other young men injured. Demonterious Davonte Jackson, 20, was shot in the leg, and 18-year-old Jerome Richard Zachary was grazed by a bullet.
The shooting occurred in broad daylight, with numerous witnesses present, including children who had been playing nearby.
The investigation into Gillmore's death quickly revealed a preceding event that authorities believed was the catalyst for the violence. Earlier that day, a robbery had been reported in the 300 block of 31st Street Northeast. The victim of that robbery, 19-year-old Courtney Ocegueda, reported that he had been robbed of a shotgun and a watch. Investigators soon connected the robbery to the subsequent shooting, identifying the victims of the shooting as the suspects in the earlier robbery. Police determined that the shooting was a direct retaliation for the robbery that had occurred just hours before.
Following the shooting, the suspect was seen fleeing the scene wearing a white t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and a red bandana covering his face. Law enforcement's investigation quickly led them to Courtney Ocegueda as the primary suspect in the shooting. He was tracked to a house in Faribault, where he was apprehended by officers who used tear gas to draw him out of the residence.
In the ensuing legal process, Courtney Ocegueda faced charges for the death of Trumane Gillmore and the injuries to the other two men. He ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder. As a result, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison. The two men who were with Gillmore at the time of the shooting, Demonterious Jackson and Jerome Zachary, also faced legal consequences for their roles in the robbery of Ocegueda that preceded the fatal shooting. Jackson pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting first-degree aggravated robbery and was sentenced to 68 months in prison, while Zachary received an 18-month prison term for his involvement.
