On the night of August 25, 2024, at approximately 11:10 p.m., Houston police officers responded to reports of a shooting at 7100 Orville Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 21-year-old Elijah Heyliger lying unresponsive in the street. Paramedics from the Houston Fire Department transported him to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The location of the incident was near a pool party at a short-term rental property in northeast Houston.
Attendees reported hearing gunshots and found Heyliger injured nearby. Despite the proximity to the gathering, initial statements from partygoers indicated that no one knew the victim. Concerns were raised by local residents about frequent parties at the property, citing issues such as blocked streets and accumulated trash.
Following the shooting, the suspect was initially described only as a Black male. Through further investigation, detectives identified 20-year-old Jolun Rodgers as the suspect. On September 11, 2024, Rodgers was arrested and subsequently charged with murder in the 185th State District Court. A booking photo of Rodgers was released by the authorities.
The arrest brought some relief to the community, though the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The case has highlighted ongoing concerns about the regulation of short-term rental properties and their impact on neighborhood safety.
