The brothers, of Somali descent, were active and cherished members of their faith community, often leading prayers and known for their bright smiles and leadership qualities.
Friends and family described them as good students who harbored aspirations of becoming imams. The incident, which unfolded around 11:30 p.m. outside their apartment at East 8th and Olive streets, was initially believed by police to be a domestic dispute.
Officers arriving at the scene found the two boys with gunshot wounds on the walkway of their apartment building; both were pronounced dead at the scene.
