On December 6, 2015, 27-year-old male Marlon D. Hill was involved in a fatal incident at a residence in the 2200 block of East 85th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The sequence of events began while Hill was inside the home of his girlfriend. A visitor, identified as Brandon M. Johnson, arrived at the residence. At some point during the visit, a dispute arose between Hill and his girlfriend, prompting the two to step outside the house to continue their argument.
Witnesses reported that
the situation escalated when Johnson also exited the residence. He was armed with a gun and intervened in the dispute, beginning an argument with Hill. According to statements provided to investigators, Johnson pointed the firearm at Hill and discharged the weapon. First responders found Hill sprawled on the ground outside the home, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to Research Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In October 2016, following an investigation into the homicide, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges against Brandon M. Johnson. Authorities charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Hill’s death. Prosecutors requested a cash-only bond of $300,000 for Johnson, who was 29 years old at the time the charges were filed. Court records detailed the witness accounts that placed Johnson at the scene and described his alleged actions of following the couple outside and shooting the victim during the altercation.
