In the early hours of a summer morning in Nashville, Tennessee, a young man's life was tragically cut short. Twenty-one-year-old Yoel Sarmiento Lopez, a Hispanic male, was fatally shot on July 24, 2023. At approximately 1:30 a.m., Lopez was sitting in the driver's seat of a parked Nissan Altima near the intersection of Sterling Boone Drive and Jay Street, enjoying music with his cousin and an acquaintance.
The tranquility of the moment was shattered when a single gunshot rang out from
within the vehicle. Josué Emanuel Cruz, an 18-year-old seated in the back, had been handling an AR-style pistol when it discharged, striking Lopez. In the immediate aftermath, Cruz fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a scene of chaos and despair. Lopez's cousin, who had been in the front passenger seat, quickly moved Lopez to the back of the car and drove to a nearby 7-Eleven on Nolensville Pike in a desperate attempt to find help.
Despite the cousin's swift actions and the prompt arrival of emergency services, Lopez succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into the shooting was swift, and later that same morning, detectives with the Specialized Investigations Division located Josué Emanuel Cruz outside a business on Nolensville Pike.
Cruz was taken into custody on a criminal homicide warrant. He declined to give a statement to the authorities regarding the incident. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide in connection with the death of Yoel Sarmiento Lopez. Funeral services for Lopez were held a few days later, on July 28, 2023, followed by his interment at a cemetery in Smyrna, Tennessee.
