In the autumn of 2024, a life was tragically cut short on the streets of East Nashville. On the evening of October 18th, 14-year-old Brendan Grady was shot outside an apartment building located at 154 North 6th Street. The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. near the Parkway Terrace Apartments, was the result of what authorities believe to be an attempted robbery gone horribly wrong.
Emergency services were promptly called to the scene, and the young male victim was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation into the death of Brendan Grady moved swiftly. Homicide detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department quickly identified a suspect, another 14-year-old named Jeremiah Smith. It was determined that Smith and Grady were acquaintances. According to the police, Smith, who was armed, was attempting to rob Grady of a pistol when the fatal shot was fired. This violent encounter has brought the issue of youth violence to the forefront of the community's concerns.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Jeremiah Smith fled the scene in a stolen Toyota Tundra pickup truck. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned in a parking garage on South 5th Street. The day after the shooting, law enforcement located and arrested Smith at his grandmother's residence. He is now facing a litany of serious charges, including criminal homicide, vehicle theft, robbery, and evidence tampering. While Smith is in custody at a juvenile detention center, the investigation remains active, as authorities have indicated they are searching for other individuals who may have been involved in or connected to the incident.
