In a tragic turn of events on a May afternoon in South Nashville, a prolonged drinking session between two family friends culminated in the death of 63-year-old Alan Howard. The male victim was fatally shot in the chest on May 23, 2024, while inside a vehicle on Fain Street. Responding officers found Howard with a chest wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man charged in connection with the shooting, 30-year-old Timothy Gibbons Jr., was present when police arrived and
immediately admitted to being the shooter. According to Gibbons' account to detectives, he and Howard had been drinking together since the previous night. The situation reportedly escalated after a friend of Howard's arrived, and Howard and Gibbons got into this person's vehicle.
Gibbons claimed that Howard became aggressive inside the car and began to strike him with both his fists and open hands. In response, Gibbons said he pulled out a semi-automatic pistol. He stated that as he was in the process of chambering a round with his finger on the trigger, the gun discharged, striking Howard in the chest.
After the shooting, Gibbons exited the vehicle and instructed a family member to contact the police. The friend of Howard, whose vehicle they were in, was not at the scene when authorities arrived. Timothy Gibbons Jr. was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal homicide for the death of Alan Howard. A judicial commissioner set his bond at $75,000 as the investigation into the fatal altercation continues.
