In the spring of 2023, the city of Nashville, Tennessee, was rocked by a tragedy that claimed the life of Michael 'Mike' Hill, a beloved 61-year-old African American custodian at The Covenant School. Known affectionately as 'Big Mike,' he was a cherished member of the school community, remembered for his warm and loving nature. A father to seven and a grandfather to fourteen, Hill was a man who found great joy in his family and his work, where he was known to greet students by name with a
hug.
On the morning of March 27, 2023, the ordinary school day was shattered when an armed intruder, 28-year-old former student Audrey Hale, forced their way into the school building. Hale, armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun, began a calculated and violent attack. Tragically, Michael Hill was one of the first victims, losing his life alongside two other adults and three nine-year-old students in the senseless act of violence. The attack plunged the tight-knit school and the wider Nashville community into a state of shock and profound grief.
The assailant, Audrey Hale, was confronted by responding officers from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. Approximately 14 minutes after the initial emergency call, police engaged Hale on the second floor of the school, fatally shooting them and bringing the deadly rampage to an end. The subsequent investigation revealed that Hale had been under a doctor's care for an emotional disorder and had legally purchased seven firearms, a fact that was unknown to their parents. Authorities also discovered detailed maps of the school and other writings, indicating a premeditated attack, though a definitive motive remained elusive.
