In the summer of 2020, a gathering of remembrance in Nashville, Tennessee, was shattered by sudden violence, leaving a community in mourning and a family searching for answers. Derontae Teasley, a 26-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on the evening of July 5th. The incident occurred in the Cayce Place public housing development, where a crowd had assembled for a vigil in a breezeway in the 500 block of South 8th Street.
It was there that the celebration of a life was tragically cut short by the loss of another.
At approximately 9:25 p.m., two unidentified men approached the gathering. Obscured by surgical masks, they opened fire, striking Teasley multiple times in what authorities have described as an apparent targeted attack. The chaos of the moment also resulted in injuries to two unintended victims, a 41-year-old man and a six-year-old boy, both of whom sustained non-life-threatening leg wounds. In the aftermath, the shooters fled the scene, disappearing into the night in what was reported to be a dark grey or blue-gray four-door sedan. Teasley was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into Derontae Teasley's death was launched by the Metro Nashville Police Department's East Precinct detectives. The suspects were described only as Black men in their 20s. Despite the public appeal for information and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement, no arrests have been made in the case. The Nashville Police Department's Cold Case Homicide Unit continues to seek leads that could bring resolution to the family and community affected by this act of violence. The case remains a poignant and unsolved chapter in the city's history, a reminder of a life taken too soon and the lingering quest for justice.
