The initial investigation into Kari’s disappearance was handled by the Keswick RCMP detachment, as she was last seen within their jurisdiction. Investigators followed up on several leads in an attempt to locate her, but their efforts were met with no success. In the days following her disappearance, searches were conducted in the area where she was last seen. As time stretched on without any contact from Kari, concern for her well-being grew, and police began to believe that she may have met with a tragic fate. Her son, Tyler Campbell-Stafford, recalls his last conversation with his mother the day before she went missing, a simple "I love you" as he left their apartment. In a public appeal for information, her family offered a $10,000 reward for any information that could lead to her whereabouts.
