The group traveled across the U.S. border to Calais, Maine, to attend a dance at the American Legion Hall on Church Street, a short drive from her home. After the festivities, she departed from the legion by herself in her red 1973 Volvo station wagon for the return trip to Canada.
Her journey took her back through the Calais/St. Stephen border crossing, where an unusual event occurred. At the Canadian entry point, her vehicle struck the customs booth, resulting in minor damage. The last time anyone officially saw Bonnie Joan Thomas, a female with long black hair, brown eyes, and a noticeable scar on her forehead, she was speaking with a Customs Officer.
The following morning, March 18, 1978, Bonnie's husband realized she had not come home and promptly reported her missing to the authorities. Later that day, her red Volvo station wagon was discovered abandoned on a remote logging road near the St. Croix River. A search of the vehicle revealed that her purse was missing. At the time of her disappearance, Bonnie was described as being 5 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds with a heavy build and a dark complexion. She had visible tooth decay and was last seen wearing faded denim pants and brown leather shoes.
