Carl Sawyer was a 16-year-old Native Hawaiian boy from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, spending the evening of February 20, 1976 the way a lot of students do when the lights are up and the weekend feels close: at the Waipahu High School “Jack Rabbit Carnival,” moving through the noise and the crowd with friends. Later that night, whatever happened after the carnival pulled him away from the safety of the school grounds and into the dark just beyond it.
