Carl Sawyer was a 16-year-old Native Hawaiian boy from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, spending the evening of February 20, 1976 the way a lot of students do when the lights are up and the weekend feels close: at the Waipahu High School “Jack Rabbit Carnival,” moving through the noise and the crowd with friends.
