In the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville, a burst of violence on the afternoon of March 15, 2023, ended the life of 17-year-old Graig Bassett. The young man, a resident of Prospect Place, was near the corner of Saratoga Avenue and Prospect Place, just a short distance from his home, when the fatal encounter occurred at approximately 4:53 p.m.
Security camera footage from the scene captured the moments leading up to the tragedy.
A suspect was seen exiting a local bodega before pulling out a handgun and firing at Bassett. Struck by a single bullet to the chest, Bassett was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Initial reports suggested an argument between a group of boys preceded the shooting.
In the wake of the incident, the New York Police Department released images and video of the suspect, described as a young man with a dark complexion, believed to be in his late teens or early 20s. He was seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a black face mask, a black jacket, black pants, and black sneakers.
About three weeks after the shooting, an arrest was made in the case. A 16-year-old was taken into custody and charged with murder for the death of Graig Bassett. Police stated that the suspect and the victim were not known to each other.
