In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 25, 2020, Robert Black, a 28-year-old Black male from Brooklyn, New York, was fatally shot. The incident occurred in a building on Rockaway Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood. Black had been on his way home from a party when he made a stop at the location where the shooting took place. He sustained gunshot wounds to his hand and torso.
Police discovered Robert Black around 5 a.m. with gunshot wounds.
His mother, Ella Jordan, received a devastating call from her daughter informing her of the incident. Rushing to the third floor of the Brownsville building, she witnessed paramedics attempting to revive her son. Tragically, their efforts were unsuccessful.
Just a week prior to his death, Black had welcomed his second child and was making plans to enroll in college classes. His family described him as someone who had faced struggles but was actively working towards a better future. In the wake of his death, family and friends gathered for a vigil to remember him, lighting candles and releasing balloons in his memory. While relatives informed a local news outlet that an arrest had been made in connection with the shooting, police at the time could not confirm this information.
