In the late hours of an April evening, a 35-year-old Hispanic male named Jorge Vazquez from Tampa, Florida, was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside the Extended Stay America hotel on South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage, New York. The incident occurred around 9:41 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Nassau County Police had responded to a report of a man shot near the hotel, and upon arrival, they discovered Vazquez, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The investigation into his death was ongoing, and detectives from the Nassau County Police Department urged anyone with information to come forward.
For nearly a month, the case remained a source of anguish for Vazquez's family, with his wife of 20 years, Muneca Vazzy, taking to social media to plead for justice for her husband. Her posts expressed frustration and questioned whether enough was being done to find the person or persons responsible for his death. In an effort to generate leads, Nassau County Crime Stoppers offered a reward for information leading to an arrest.
A significant breakthrough in the case came at the end of April. On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, a coordinated effort between the Nassau County Homicide Squad, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Tamaqua Police Department led to the apprehension of two suspects in the borough of Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The suspects were identified as 22-year-old Santana Sgroilin of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, and 19-year-old Jaslynn Nevaeh Garcia of Shillington, Pennsylvania.
Following their capture, both Sgroilin and Garcia were initially held in Pennsylvania as fugitives from justice. They were subsequently extradited to Nassau County to face charges in connection with Vazquez's death. Both individuals have been charged with second-degree murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon. While authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the killing, the arrests brought a measure of progress in the quest for justice for Jorge Vazquez. Jaslynn Garcia was arraigned in early May, followed by Santana Sgroilin's arraignment, which was scheduled for mid-May at the First District Court in Hempstead.
